Transportation Systems Engineer

The purpose of this job is to manage the development and operation of the Transportation System within Athens-Clarke County and to assist the Traffic Engineer as needed. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing and monitoring of signal timing plans for systems in Athens-Clarke County, performing transportation and intersection evaluations to resolve problems, recommending bid proposals, negotiating contracts, managing the planning and implementation of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) projects, providing technical expertise, and assisting the Traffic Engineer as necessary in reviewing site plans, managing transportation consultants, and performing additional tasks as assigned.
Qualified applicants should possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
· knowledge of traffic engineering principles, including traffic signal operations, level of service analysis, signal system implementation, and safety evaluation;
· knowledge of repair, maintenance and installation of OSP fiber optic communication systems, CCTV systems, and traffic systems;
· knowledge of microcomputers, minicomputers, and local area networks; and
· skill in use of drafting instruments, surveying instruments, vehicle counters, optical time delay reflectometers, oscilloscopes, and multimeters.
Bachelor's degree in civil or electrical engineering with two years of related experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job. Engineering-In-Training (EIT) Certificate is required. Three years supervisory experience is required. Must possess a valid driver's license. See job description for further details.
