Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to compile and disseminate statistical data
relevant to crime, crime patterns and crime trends. Duties and
responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing crime analysis
using analytical tools to track crime incidents and to identify patterns of
crime and crime trends conducting research, compiling reports, charts and
graphs maintaining and updating statistical records for documentation of
criminal cases, and performing additional duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be
construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and
assigned. Monitors and analyzes crime activity and uses the information to create
reports, and trends of criminal activity provides recommendations and
advises on criminal activity trends. Disseminates pertinent statistical information on crime patterns to
departmental personnel and assists in problem solving. Conducts research on subjects related to crime collects, analyzes and
interprets data received from units within the department and other law
enforcement agencies performs statistical calculations to compile and
summarize criminal activities. Produces daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly summaries of crime
and calls for service, documents and tracks crime trends and patterns. Compiles workload analysis summaries, reports and projections. Provides technical support to internal and external candidates as
necessary. Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of the Unified
Government of Athens-Clarke County and the operations and functions of the
Police Department. Knowledge of all applicable laws, ordinances, policies,
standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and
responsibilities of the job. Knowledgeable and proficient with computers
and information technology, geographical information systems (GIS), and
spatial analysis. Knowledge of the National Crime Information Center and
the Georgia Crime Information Center rules and regulations. Ability to
effectively communicate and interact with management, employees, members of
the general public and all other groups involved in the activities of the
Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County as they relate to the Police
Department. Ability to assemble information and make written reports and
documents in a concise, clear and effective manner. Ability to use
independent judgment and discretion. Ability to comprehend, interpret, and
apply regulations, procedures, and related information. Ability to handle
required calculations using statistical calculations. Ability to read,
understand and interpret personnel and financial reports and related
materials. Ability to operate various office equipment including a
computer, printer, typewriter, calculator, copier, facsimile machines, and
telephones. Ability to utilize various computer software programs relevant
to the position.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related
field with one year experience in data analysis, research methods,
statistics, or related field (preferably in a law enforcement environment)
required or any equivalent combination of education, training, and
experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities
for this job. Knowledge of and experience in using Geographical
Information Systems (GIS) and general purpose reporting tools such as
Crystal Reports software preferred. Must possess a valid drivers license.

TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of
machinery and equipment including a computer, printer, typewriter,
calculator, copier, facsimile machine, and telephone. Must be able to
exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, andor up to ten pounds of
force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for
sedentary work.
DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare andor judge the readily
observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics
(whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people,
or things.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to speak andor signal
people to convey or exchange information. Includes givingreceiving
assignments andor directions tofrom co-workers, assistants or
supervisors.
LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires ability to read a variety of informational
documentation, directions, instructions, methods and procedures. Requires
the ability to prepare letters, reports, forms, spreadsheets, etc., using
prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar,
diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak to individuals andor
groups of people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand relatively
complex principles and techniques to acquire and be able to expound on
knowledge of topics related to primary occupation and to make independent
judgment in the absence of management.
VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to
explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be
able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of
administrative, technical or professional languages including terminology
related to law enforcement.
NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas
add and subtract totals multiply and divide determine percentages
perform calculations involving variables. FORMSPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper
length, width, and shape, visually with a variety of machinery and
equipment including a computer, printer, typewriter, calculator, copier,
facsimile machine, and telephone.
MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in
using office equipment.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as
automated office equipment, secretarial supplies, and computer supplies. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while
coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal
levels of eyehandfoot coordination
PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk andor hear: (Talking
