Purpose of Job

The purpose of this position varies to include collection of park entrance fees, greeting and providing park information to the general public, and assisting in the maintenance, inspections, enforcement, operations, programs, office tasks, and other areas assigned in either a park or facility. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


The following duties are normal for this job.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

Greets and provides facility information to the general public.  Answers telephones and ensures questions are answered.  Prepares daily reports on statistics.  Stays abreast of issues and happenings at the facility and serves as the public relations officer for the facility.  Provides general maintenance assistance including litter pick-up in and around facilities, performs routine inspections of facility grounds and equipment, reports any needed repairs or concerns.  Maintains equipment and cleans equipment as required.  Assists with any problems they may encounter.  Assists with set-up and breakdown of various areas for meetings, events and programs Enforces rules and regulations.  Ensures safety of all patrons and personal property.  When Assigned to Sandy Creek Park Collects park entrance fees.  Responsible for all aspects of rental operations including rental of canoes, Jon boats, paddle boats, life jackets and other related equipment.  Assists with Sandy Creek Park programs and leads volunteer activities.  Performs lake safety operations and monitors park for unsafe activities and equipment.  Prepares daily reports on statistics and revenue generated.  Performs park improvement and repair projects.  Conducts inventories of items and equipment.  Balances cash for deposits and makes deposits as required.  Performs opening and closing procedures as needed.  Takes reservations for Sandy Creek Park facilities.  When Assigned to East Athens Community Center - Outside Monitors playground, tennis courts, ball fields, pavilion, parking lot, swimming pool area, stairwells and related areas.  Remove trash andor debris from grounds and equipment areas as needed.  When Assigned to East Athens Community Center - Inside Answers phones, handles funds, registrations and other administrative duties.  Assists andor leads activities in game room, craft area and gym.  Assists with the set-up and breakdown of various areas for meetings, events and programs.  Assists with closing procedures as needed.  When Assigned to Greenway and Riverside Parks Assists in maintenance, inspection, enforcement, operations, programs, office tasks, and other areas of Greenways Riverside Parks.  Performs mowing, blowing, trimming, edging, cutting, pruning, and cleaning of facilities Controls weeds, kudzu, privet, and other invasive vegetation.  Performs routine inspections of facility grounds and equipment Assists with programs as required.  Resolves problems that may arise in a proactive and professional manner Performs other related duties as required.  When Assigned to Park Services: Under the supervision of a Certified Pool Operator will sweep pools, clean skimmers and decks and assists in the addition of pool chemicals when necessary performs minor pool repairs as necessary.  Collects trash and garbage, cleans restrooms and bathhouses and performs minor repairs as directed.  Performs other related duties as required.  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of assigned division in the Leisure Services Department.  Knowledge of management and recreational practices, policies, and procedures as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities.  Knowledge of all applicable laws, ordinances, policies, standards and regulations pertaining to the duties and responsibilities of the job.  Ability to effectively communicate and interact with subordinates, management, employees, members of the general public and all other groups involved in the activities of the Athens - Clarke County Government as they relate to the Leisure Services department.  Ability to effectively handle human relations and technical subjects.  Ability to handle the required mathematical calculations.  Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 



Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Some High School education and public relations and cash handling experience is required or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a computer, typewriter, copier, calculator, facsimile machine, etc.  Must be able to use body members to work, move, or carry objects or materials.  Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally, andor up to twenty pounds of force frequently.  Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for light to medium work.  May require frequent stooping, bending or kneeling. 

DATA CONCEPTION:

Requires the ability to compare andor judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things. 

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION:

Requires the ability to speak andor signal people to convey or exchange information.  Includes giving receiving assignments andor directions to co-workers or assistants from supervisors. 

LANGUAGE ABILITY:

Requires ability to read a variety of memos and informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures.  Requires the ability to prepare reports, logs and maintenance forms using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.  Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence. 

INTELLIGENCE:

Requires the ability to learn and understand basic principles and techniques, to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation, and to make independent judgement in the absence of management. 

VERBAL APTITUDE:

Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions.  Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of administrative, technical, or professional languages including mechanical and electrical terminology. 

NUMERICAL APTITUDE:

Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, and to utilize and determine percentages.  FORMSPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with construction, mechanical, and electrical tools. 

MOTOR COORDINATION:

Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using construction, mechanics, carpentry, landscaping, plumbing, and electrical equipment. 

MANUAL DEXTERITY:

Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as a computer, copying machine, calculator and typewriter.  Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities.  Must have minimal levels of eyehandfoot coordination. 

COLOR DISCRIMINATION:

May require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color. 

INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT:

Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.  Must be adaptable to performing under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency. 

PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION:

Requires the ability to talk andor hear: (Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words).  (Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear).  Must be able to communicate via telephone, two-way radio.
